Smash Mouth’s Steve Harwell Dead at Age 56

Former Smash Mouth lead singer Steve Harwell died on Monday (Sept. 4).

The band’s manager Robert Hayes tells PEOPLE that Harwell died of acute liver failure at his home in Boise, Idaho.  A source told PEOPLE in 2021 the singer “suffered profusely” with addiction over the years, which led to some medical and mental health issues.

Harwell former Smash Mouth with with drummer Kevin Coleman, guitarist Greg Camp and bassist Paul De Lisle in 1994.  Their biggest hit was 1999’s “All Star”.

Harwell was 56.
