Cubs struggled to beat the Dodgers over the weekend. Yesterday’s loss came 7-3 as LA’s Mookie Betts drove in 4 and homered. It was the story of the long weekend for Chicago, who had entered the series already 2-1 against LA, but also were one of the top hitting teams in MLB. That didn’t show up outside of their 13-0 victory on Saturday. In fact, you remove that win, and the Cubs didn’t hit better than .194 in the series.

To make matters worse, they’ve lost some ground this weekend in the NL Central. The Pittsburgh Pirates are an absolute wagon right now winning their 7th game in a row. They remain the hottest team in baseball and now own the lead in the division over the Brewers by a half a game. Heading into the dodgers series both teams sat 2.5 game back from the brew crew for the top spot. Now the Cubs sit 3 back from the Pirates.

Cubs did get some positive news on the pitching front. Kyle Hendricks could be back soon. The Professor, who hasn’t thrown since July 5th, had a 3 inning simulated game over the weekend in Arizona. That reportedly went well. He’ll look to bounce back from what was a poor 2022 that, while shortened and injury plauged, saw his hiest ratios of hits, homers allowed and ERA. No time table for his return at this time.
