The Indiana Fever had the number one overall pick in the WNBA draft last night for the very first time in franchise history. They used that to grab Aliyah Boston of South Carolina. Boston is the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year and a four-time Lisa Leslie Award winner as the top college center. She helped lead the Gamecocks to a 2022 national title while going 129-9 in her collegiate career.
With the 7th overall pick, the Fever took Grace Berger from Indiana. An All-Big Ten first team honoree, she becomes the first Hoosier player to ever be selected in the first round. She was the catalyst for IU’s surge this season. She’ll provide toughness and a steady shot for the Fever from the guard position.
As for the rest of the picks the Fever would take one more Big Ten player in Ohio State’s 13. Taylor Miksell, LSU, La Dazhia WIlliams, and Houston’s South Carolina teammate Victaria Saxton. ESPN gave the team’s draft an A rating. Preseason for the League will start May 5th. The Fever’s first preseason game will be the 6th in Chicago, but will play their other preason game at home on the 13th. The regular season for the Fever starts Friday May 19th at home.
