Both Purdue basketball teams heard their names called on Selection Sunday. The men’s team was a no doubt about it squad. But the women’s team was a bit more indoubt. They came on late with some great road wins over ranked opponents in the Big Ten to get their shot, and now they have it it. So what all do you need to know?
First, lets start with the men who have the #1 Seed in the East Region will play on Friday at 6:50pm on TNT in Columbus Ohio. Thing is, they don’t know who they’ll play just yet. They’ll play either Texas Southern (14-20) or Fairleigh Dickenson who is one of the shortest teams in the field. Their tallest player is 6’7 but only plays 3.5 mins per game. Those two teams will play on Wednesday at 6:40 on TruTV. Winner will head to Columbus to take on the Boilers.
An opening round win for Purdue would see them take on the winner Memphis or Florida Atlantic with a trip to the Sweet 16 on the line which would be played at Madison Square Garden.
Now for the Women, who are in, but as a First Four team. So they’ll have to square off as an 11 seed against 11th-seeded St. John’s on ESPN2. Tipoff from Value City Arena in Columbus, Ohio, is set for 7 p.m. The winner of Thursday’s matchup will take on No. 6 North Carolina on Saturday. Site host 3rd-seeded Ohio will face No. 14 seed James Madison in the nightcap. The winners of the two games will meet on Monday.Purdue is 26-12 all-time on neutral floors in the NCAA Tournament. The Boilermakers and Red Storm have met just once before in the Paradise Jam in 2018. St. John’s edged Purdue 68-62.
